Keyvius Sampson, RHP, Grade B-: Like Smith, he’s got plenty of fastball but his secondary pitches … Sliding into the number 16 slot on the Padres big board of prospects, Knehr has improved in areas surrounding his pitching. He is a guy that might take advantage of the lost 2020 season and come out with a few more ticks on his fastball. So, in theory, his proximity to the majors is also a reason to not be as excited about him; if that makes any sense. It’s a frustrating experience, to say the least, but his potential is still quite high if he can figure things out. El Paso hosts the Triple A club. I don’t want to regurgitate the same, old information but rather I want to give my opinion that is based on research and well-developed thought. His growth as a junior and senior in high school are pretty remarkable and he was primed for a huge jump had he been able to showcase his skills in his senior year. He is already 23 and a legit college player, so he might move quickly and become a 4th outfielder who enjoys some productive years in his prime. Age: 20 The results, if that were the case, would probably be eye-popping. At virtually every position and every level, the team has players who are potential prospects. Tucupita Marcano, IF (2020 Rank: #15) But Espinoza is coming off a second Tommy John surgery, and he hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2016. The San Diego Padres have an abundance of talent. As there was no minor league season in 2020, there are some instances where no new information was gleaned about a player. Is there a reason for that? The ceiling is quite low, but he has been consistent throughout his career and will probably make it all to the show at some point. However, he only pitched 50 innings in 2019, and has yet to get above Low-A. Highest Level: International. 19. Of course, injuries can ruin all of that in a single pitch with him, so buyer beware. Luarbert Arias, RHP (2020 Rank: NR) Age: 21 His stats don’t jump out at you and he looks overmatched at times, but none of that really worries you. If he were a few years younger he would be much higher. He strikes out a ton, doesn’t walk, and sells out for his power, but there is so much to like here that he is worth a gamble on. Taylor Kohlwey, OF (2020 Rank: NR) As such, it's fair to expect the Padres to continue to linger near the top of farm system rankings in the future -- even as they continue to graduate talent to the big leagues. At the plate, he combines excellent bat-to-ball skills with legit power. But the point is that the last ‘fun’ guy I mentioned in the system was Cronenworth, so there’s always hope. Age: 24 He has all the tools and it shows at certain times, both on defense and at the plate. Age: 21 I can see him being the backup soon, although the Padres are pretty set at the big league level with Austin Nola and Victor Caratini. Weathers is a curious case.
